Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
Explorer Scouts often work closely with other Explorer Scouts in the District, so can take part in an even wider spectrum of activities.
There is a range of ambitious badges and awards, through which Explorers can demonstrate their proficiencies and expand their interests. The highest of which are the Chief Scout's Diamond and the Chief Scout's Platinum.
The Queen's Scout Award and Explorer Belt are also available from the age of 14 up until the age of 25, and as with the other sections there are also 29 Activity Badges, and 14 Staged Awards.

A unique aspect of the Explorer Scout programme is the Young Leaders' Scheme. This gives young people aged 14 to 18 to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section. The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.
Explorer Scouts take much more responsibility for their programme content that in younger sections, but as with all other sections, at its core it still a Balance Programme built upon the Programme Zones, all of which are delivered using various different methods which include; Methods Visits Games Outdoor Activities Residential Experiences Technology Networking Activities Discussion |
